Now with that being said, while watching and listening to Brian's Ted Talk I began glancing around my room at different objects. Knowing that all of these objects I obviously SEE everyday but what is something that I really don't see. Something that I pay attention to everyday without actually paying attention to it.
Once I started thinking about that, immediately I went....BAM! --- My Candles of course <3
To just put it out there, I am addicted to candles. Bath and Body Works specifically. Candles are all over my house and especially my room. So I see them everyday. I walk passed them. I stop and check to see how much is used and if one should be replaced. I light them. I blow them out. All of these are usually daily rituals for me once I am relaxed at home. However, it is an object I constantly see without realizing how much I see it.
In reference to Brian, you can read a visual text quicker than you can read an actual text. I took a moment to look at my candle and analyze it. First few things that came to mind was relaxation and scent. I also made meaning out of my candles. In my everyday world, my candles represent the time that I am ready to chill out, relax and watch T.V. I light my candles every time I am ready to climb in bed and turn on my lamps, pour a glass of wine and watch something good on TV. It represents relaxing....and peace :)
Candles most definitely integrate the capacity of our senses. I am sure that if everything was extremely silent you could hear the fire burning the wick. There are emotions that candles evoke and I agree with relaxation and peace.
ReplyDeleteHow I wish this computer had scratch 'n sniff! You did such a nice job of describing your candles that I wished I could inhale their fragrances.. I also would have loved a video--I'm mesmerized by the flickering of candle flames. Like you I love candles. I have a "fake" fireplace filled with candles, which I like just as much (almost) as a real fireplace. It certainly is less upkeep.
ReplyDeleteWhoever posted above mentioned the sound of the burning wick. I have one candle that has a wood wick, so I can hear the crackle and sizzle of the wood as it burns. So yummy!
I couldn't help but notice in the photo you posted that both candles feature silver--decorations on one, cover on the other. Is the element of silver part of their appeal for you? I also noticed (a) your dresser or table is dust-free! (b) you don't have a lot of clutter to distract from the candles; and (c) other items on the surface are arranged on some sort of crystal tray. This suggests to me that you enjoy/need a peaceful environment in which to relax. The candles, as you point out, contribute significantly to that feeling. I suspect the orderliness of your room (at least what I can see of it) also contribute to that feeling.
